Brantley Gasaway: “Progressive Evangelicals and the Ethics of Same-Sex Marriage” – March 2016

Evangelical Christians have been among the most vocal opponents of the gay rights movement over the past four decades. In addition to denouncing same-sex behavior as immoral, many conservative Christians have engaged in political efforts to ensure that governments only license traditional heterosexual marriages. However, a small but growing number of socially and politically progressive evangelicals have reached different conclusions regarding the ethics of same-sex marriage. In this talk, Prof. Gasaway examines how and why these progressive evangelicals have believed that the Bible allows or even compels them to promote the full equality of LGBT individuals in both churches and the public sphere.
