Tatham Dilks ’15 & Abbey Brundage ’16: “Mental Health, Women’s Lives, and Incarceration” – February 25, 2015

People with mental health issues are over-represented in the criminal justice system, and female inmates have higher rates of mental health diagnoses compared to men. This presentation is the result of an action research project conducted collaboratively by women incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution at Muncy and Bucknell students, including ourselves, in the Inside-Out course, “Women and the Penal System” in Spring 2014. We begin by describing our experiences in this unique course and then provide statistical trends and key issues related to mental health, women’s lives, and incarceration.
