“Food, Farming, and Freedom: The New Black Agrarians”
Black urban farmers and gardeners in San Francisco’s Bay Area have a vision that is both old and new. Like one of our country’s most famous founders, Thomas Jefferson, they believe that small farming makes for good citizens. Unlike Jefferson, they are also committed to anti-racism and multicultural solidarity. Their vision of the good life does not fit the traditional civil rights paradigm. This lecture will argue that the new Black agrarianism represents a perhaps surprising complement to the Black Lives Matter movement, and also that it constitutes one of the arts of living on a damaged planet.
