Concert: The Struggle to Be Heard– Chamber Music of Diverse Composers – March 4, 2016

March 4, 2016,   7:30 p.m.  Natalie Davis Rooke Recital Hall (Part of The Bucknell Orchestra Semester of Social Justice) The second concert of the Bucknell Orchestra Semester of Social Justice Series presents performances of chamber music by diverse, underrepresented composers.  The program includes works by African-American Composer William Grant Still, openly gay, turn of the 20th century composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes, transgendered composer Angela Morley, and woman composer Sylvia Glickman.  Students from the Bucknell Orchestra, and the Metta Quartet will perform.  Admission is free.  This concert is made possible in part with support from the President’s Fund, the It Starts […]

Clarence Hardy: “Far From God”: A Bastard People, Baldwin, Black Religion, and America – March 2, 2016

Wednesday, March 2, 7 p.m., ELC Gallery Theatre (LC 301) Clarence E. Hardy is professor of the History of American Christianity at Yale Divinity School, and the author of the acclaimed James Baldwin’s God: Sex, Hope and Crisis in Black Holiness Culture. He has written articles that have appeared in The Journal of Religion, Church History, and The American Quarterly and consider various aspects of black religious culture. Professor Hardy is especially interested in the evolution of black religious rhetoric in the United States during the interwar and postwar periods.  He is currently working on two books that consider how black descriptions of the […]

Judith Jamison: Choreographer/Dancer/Dance Company Director – February 24, 2016

Wednesday, February 24, 7pm, Tustin Studio Theatre (Co-sponsored with Theatre & Dance and supported with funding from the University Lectureship Committee) Judith Jamison joined Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965 and quickly became an international star. Over the next 15 years, Mr. Ailey created some of his most enduring roles for her, most notably the tour-de-force solo Cry. During the 1970s and 80s, she appeared as a guest artist with ballet companies all over the world, starred in the hit Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies, and formed her own company, The Jamison Project. Concert: The Struggle to be Heard– Women Composers and the Symphony – February 20, 2016

February 20, 2016, 7:30 p.m. Weis Center for the Performing Arts Commemorating International Women’s Day, The first concert in the Bucknell Orchestra Semester of Social Justice Series explores the music of great women composers.  The concert opens with the overture to The Boatswain’s Mate by Ethel Smyth, British composer and suffragette.  Flute soloist Leslie Cullen will perform Cécile Chaminade’s Concertino for Flute and Orchestra.  Music from the first symphony of Florence Price, the first African-American woman to have a composition performed by a major orchestra, and Rachel Portman’s original film score to The Cider House Rules completes the program.  Admission is […]
